Kisyov, Yordan (Кисьов, Йордан)
Silistra, 1945
He was born in Silistra but grew up in Sofia. In 1964, he graduated from the High School of Arts, where his teacher was Dimitar Arnaudov. He continued his studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts of St. Cyril and St. Methodius University in Veliko Tarnovo, graduating in 1972. In 1973 he began working as a curator at the Silistra Art Gallery, serving as its director from 1990 to 2013. His earlier works reflected a spirit of personal expressionism, though concerns with abstraction were also evident. His more recent works (paintings, wall constructions, and installations) focus on dreamlike landscapes, with water as a central motif. He is concerned with conveying a metaphysical atmosphere, paying particular attention to elements such as light and movement. In 1977, he presented his first solo exhibition at the Silistra Art Gallery. Numerous solo presentations followed, both in Bulgaria and abroad. The most recent, entitled ‟Between Sky and Water”, which included paintings and installations, was hosted at Rayko Alexiev Hall (Sofia) in June 2024. He has also taken part in many group exhibitions in Bulgaria and abroad. His works are held in the country’s most important art galleries (National Gallery, and the galleries of Sofia, Plovdiv, Veliko Tarnovo, Burgas, among others), in the Galerie Neue Meister in Dresden, the Museum of Fine Arts in Szczecin, Poland, as well as in private collections. In 1986 he was awarded the title “Artistic Worker,” and in 2021 he received the Vladimir Dimitrov Prize, the highest painting award bestowed by the Union of Bulgarian Artists.
