Lemnos, 1949
Born on Lemnos, he moved with his family to Melbourne, Australia, in 1957. He studied painting at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School (1968–1971) under John Brack and Alun Leach-Jones. He taught for more than a decade at the art departments of Prahran College of Advanced Education and the Victoria College of the Arts. He currently lives and works in Ferntree Gully (Melbourne), while making regular visits to Greece, particularly Lemnos. His work focuses mainly on landscapes and, secondarily, the human figure. Drawing inspiration from European modernism, especially Paul Cézanne, cubism, and futurism, his painting also reflects expressionist elements and influences from the Fauves. He seeks to interpret the visible world through schematic simplification and chromatic restraint that highlight form and the structural role of light. His portraits often display more expressionist features. He has presented solo exhibitions in Melbourne, notably at Tolarnos Gallery (1975) and Pinacotheca (1984, 1986). He has also participated in many group exhibitions in Australia and Greece. In 2019 he took part in ‟Paul Laspagis, Kathryn Ryan and Stephen Wickham” at Deakin University Downtown Gallery (Melbourne). His most recent solo exhibition, ‟Hellenic Fields”, inspired by his travels to Greece and especially Lemnos, was presented at the Victorian Artists Society Hammond Gallery in 2024.
