Podgorica, 1964
He studied Fine Arts Education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nikšić. He continued his studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Montenegro in Cetinje, where he trained under Ratka Lalić and graduated in 1993. Krulj is a painter who does not hesitate to experiment with different genres. He produces portraits, still lifes, animal paintings, and allegorical compositions. His oil paintings adopt a photorealistic style with an emphasis on detail, while his drawings display a much freer, expressionistic character. In his icons, he faithfully follows the Byzantine tradition. His most original compositions (notably the ‟Circles” series) impress not only with their intense photorealism but also with their surreal, unsettling atmosphere, revealing his fascination with the realm of the fantastic. Also noteworthy is his series ‟Trunks” — a reflection on matter, substance, and existence. In addition to painting, Krulj has worked in film and video art. He has produced more than thirty short films — documentaries, fiction, and experimental works — which have been screened at various international festivals and received several awards. Between 1994 and 1999, he held six solo exhibitions of painting and five multimedia presentations combining painting with video projection, both in Montenegro and abroad. From 1995 to 2019, he did not hold any solo exhibitions in his home country. In total, he has organized twenty solo exhibitions, most notably in Podgorica, Banja Luka, and Mostar, among others. He has also participated in many group exhibitions and painting symposia in Montenegro and internationally.
