Kontellis, Andreas
Athens, 1966
He was born in Athens, but his family originates from Lemnos, where he spent his childhood. He took his first painting lessons with Rena Anousi Hlia (1979–1982) and later with Vrasidas Vlachopoulos (1982–1984). He then studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1984–1990) under Panagiotis Tetsis. During his studies he was awarded IKY (State Scholarships Foundation) grants, and in 1993 he received a three-year domestic scholarship, also from IKY. With a scholarship from the Academy of Athens, he continued his education at Middlesex University, London, where he obtained a Master of Arts in 2000, studying under John Thompson and Jim Mooney. He lives and works in Athens. He has established himself as one of the most important contemporary Greek figurative painters. His subjects include traditional themes such as landscapes, nudes, interiors, and portraits. His paintings stand out for their strong drawing and the distinctive role of light. However, his primary expressive medium is rich, explosive color, linking him to expressionism and its extensions, though his style is not anti-realist. His first solo exhibition took place at Tholos Hall (Athens, 1984). Many others followed in various Greek and international cities (Barcelona, 2012; New York, 2019). He has also participated in group exhibitions in Greece and abroad. In 2010, the retrospective exhibition ‟Nostos” was organized at the Kontias Art Gallery, while his latest solo show, ‟A Journey through Lemnos”, was presented at Apothiki Gallery on Lemnos in 2025, curated by Ira Apostolou.
