Vardavaki Mergia, Vana
Lemnos, 1955
She was born and raised on Lemnos. She showed an interest in the visual arts from her school years and took painting and relief lessons with painter Vasso Dotsika. From 1991 to 2002 she lived in Patras, where she studied painting in a private school under Florentine artist Pascal De Martino. From 1997 onward, she began to systematically study Byzantine art, particularly icon painting, first with Petros Lamprinakos and later with Ioannis Foteinopoulos. While living in Achaia, she also began teaching painting, a practice she continued after returning to Lemnos in 2002. She taught at the Cultural Association of Atsiki. Her painting draws on Byzantine and folk art. In her icons she adheres more closely to tradition, while in her secular works she adopts a brighter palette, placing emphasis on the role of light. Her first solo exhibition was held at the All-Girls’ School of Myrina in 2003. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions on Lemnos and in other Greek cities. In 2018, she presented a solo exhibition of religious icons at the ‟Apothiki” venue in Myrina.
