Upon graduating, he became an assistant at the school and later attained the rank of full professor. In 1955 he also became a member of the Union of Visual Artists of Romania, and in 1999 was elected honorary president of the Union in recognition of his contribution. He was one of the most renowned and respected Romanian painters of recent decades. He was particularly concerned with the relationship between art and the social sphere, and between modern and contemporary art. Within this framework belong his large cycles of abstract paintings\u2014he was one of the first Romanians to produce abstract works. He also engaged with the values of medieval and Byzantine art, especially as a spiritual foundation for contemporary Romanian creativity. He first presented his work to the public in 1954, with a series of drawings at the annual state exhibition in Bucharest. Thereafter, he participated in countless group exhibitions in Romania and abroad, as well as in more than 150 symposia. His first solo exhibition was at Orizont Gallery, Bucharest (1965). Many others followed in Romania and abroad (Poland, Austria, Germany, Bulgaria, etc.). In 1970 he represented his country at the Venice Biennale, and in 2004 a major retrospective was inaugurated at the Museum of Art in Constan\u021ba. He received numerous significant awards, including the Prize of the Union of Visual Artists (1964, 1985), the Ion Andreescu Prize of the Romanian Academy (1983), and an International Prize at the exhibition \u201fOmaggio a Picasso\u201d (Palazzo Barberini, Rome, 1999).
