Kopsidou, Sofia
Chevetogne, Belgium, 1959
Daughter of the Lemnian painter Rallis Kopsidis, she was born in Belgium, where her father was working on the decoration of the Monastery of the Holy Cross in Chevetogne. In 1960 the family returned to Greece and she grew up in Glyfada, Athens. She pursued free art studies in Athens before moving to Paris, where she was admitted to the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts after entrance examinations. Upon returning to Greece, she devoted herself to painting and, more recently, to music. She divides her time between Glyfada and Paros, while also working systematically to preserve and promote her father’s artistic legacy. Her painting is influenced by French art of the 1960s–1980s. Drawing from pop art and expressionism, she also employs collage and photography. The central theme of her work is the female figure, through which she critically engages with stereotypes concerning women’s role in contemporary society. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Greece and abroad. Notable examples include ‟A Burned Exhibition” (Orizontas Gallery, Athens, 2007) and, more recently, ‟The Athletic Ideal, Man and the Arts” (Town Hall of Ancient Olympia, 2020). She is also an active member of the artist collective ‟Orizontas Gegonoton”, regularly taking part in its exhibitions.
