Mirchev, Ivaylo (Мирчев, Ивайло)
Sofia, 1954
Son of the famous painter Nikola Mirchev, he studied painting at the National Academy of Arts in the studio of Svetlin Rusev, graduating in 1981. He taught painting at the Academy as professor, and from 2004 to 2011 he served as president of the Union of Bulgarian Painters. Mirchev works almost exclusively in painting, producing oils and works in lighter media (charcoal, gouache, watercolor, etc.). His paintings are representational, but his style is expressionist. He is primarily concerned with landscape. His compositions—graphic landscapes and sometimes lyrical nightscapes—are marked by stylization, a nervous line, and rich, anti-realist color. His first solo exhibition was hosted at Ruski 6 Gallery in Sofia in 1985. Since then, he has held many solo shows, one of the most recent being at Astry Gallery in Sofia in 2025. He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions in Bulgaria and abroad. He has received several distinctions, such as the Grand Prize at the Exhibition of Young Artists (1986) and the Vladimir Dimitrov Prize, the highest painting award of the Union of Bulgarian Artists (2014). His works are held in the National Gallery of Bulgaria, the Sofia City Gallery, as well as in collections in Aachen, Frankfurt, Vienna, Milan, Turkey, and elsewhere.
